Wonderful Pair of Antique Layover Pillow Shams embroidered with Turkey Red Woman Sweeping with a Broom and Children

This wonderfully unusual pair of antique embroidered white cotton layover style pillow shams are based on the 19th century concept of "Doing One's Duty." (no matter what!) Many came from kits but this pair seems to be something that someone dreamed up on their own.

Each is embroidered with women sweeping with brooms and they also feature two children in the top corners and rosebuds in the bottom ones. The "life is duty" concept was popular during the 19th century and these items feature a weary woman hard at work. The naive and charming designs are embroidered in Turkey red thread.

They measure 28x30". Excellent condition, even with a small hole. c.1880-1900.
