MY THOUGHTS ON LINEN AND LACE TODAY
Everything I look at, I see through the lens of history.
The lens can focus clearly. Conversely, it can also blur things.
The following links are some thoughts on the state of textiles in our lives and in the world today. We may forget that linens are an important part of our everyday lives, but they are so ubiquitous that we can overlook them. in the things we choose or choose not, to buy, touch and use. Things such as our clothing, from inside wear to outerwear; from bedding to towels (maybe even made of paper?) to napkins, again maybe made of paper or maybe not.
The "play movie" link will open a movie of a woman making bobbin lace. The lacemaking demonstration took place in September 2008 in Bruges, Belgium at the lace museum, called the Kantmuseum. It will take a few minutes to load. But, I think you will be as astonished as I was if you have never before seen bobbin lace being made by hand. The lacemaker uses a pattern which she keeps beside her and she glances at it from time to time without stopping her hand movements!
