Marghab Linens
Marghab is one of those things... even if you do not know what it is when you look at it, you know it's something special! The designs are spellbinding and are executed to the highest level of perfection. The designs range from spectacular flowers to vegetables, the three little pigs, whimsical fish and zebras.
Marghab Linens were produced in Madeira, Portugal between 1934-1984 and were considered the finest embroidery crafted at the time. Emile Marghab, Inc. was renowned for its unrelenting pursuit of, and demand for, perfection in both its products and artisans. Vera Marghab was the driving force behind the imaginative and beautiful designs executed to her standards of perfection. During the company’s reign the exquisite linens were sought after by politicians, movie stars, diplomats and industrialists due to their unmatched quality, exacting standards, and beauty of design. Today, Marghab linens are a benchmark for comparing hand embroidered linens.

At the moment, there is not a definitive Marghab text. Worse, some of the Marghab designs have been lost and there is no record as to what they looked like. I am starting to compile a list of pictures of the Marghab patterns that I have seen. A (somewhat) interesting book, Perfection, Never Less: The Vera Way Marghab Story, has some lovely photographs and has a list in the back of the pattern names and numbers.

I was interviewed regarding Marghab in 2004:
