A Duvet cover (French: pronounced "doo-vay") is an envelope into which a comforter is inserted. This is a method of bedding which is still used in most of the UK and Europe today. (as opposed to the USA which has embraced the top and bottom sheet philosophy.) The duvet cover protects the comforter and is removed for frequent laundering. With a duvet, no top sheet is used; the duvet is stuffed with a comforter and functions as a free-floating (not tucked into the mattress) device. It is an exceptionally comfortable method of sleeping, too. There are many methods of keeping modern duvet covers closed at the bottom to contain the comforter: some tie, some button, some have velcro, some have mitered pockets into which the comforter corners fit, some have a longer flap that enfolds the comforter and I have one that is completely open across the entire bottom and the comforter slides out with annoying regularity.
