Superb Ancient Russian Kokoshnik Headdress Cap Back Embroidered with Gold and Silver Metallic Threads

This antique head-piece is intricately embroidered with gold and silver metallic threads, gold bullion. It has been sewn together with a woven brocade fabric possibly to form a purse bottom. This gold embroidered headpiece is an ancient and rare cap, possibly one called a Kokoshnik. It measures 7" high and approx. 7.5" wide.

It was shown in several textile museum exhibitions in the 1930s. A paper tag from the collector reads "Russian cap with gold - silver thread — very old." The condition of the front face is excellent; the brocade back shows some wear. It may have been refashioned at some time. Russia, c. 18th-19th century.
