Cynthia’s Antique & Vintage Linens

The Spanish Stitch and the 15th Century X Stitch Booklet

This small booklet was self-published in New Mexico by GertrudeWHowells, a textile collector who traveled during the early 20th century in pursuit of antique linens, laces and stitches. She mounted travelling exhibitions of ancient textiles in hopes of preserving and recording them as well as igniting interest in others. She, herself, wove, which contributed to her understanding of the make-up of wovens and embroidery stitches. She seemed to have been especially fascinated by the subject matters of 15th Century cross stitch as her booklet is filled only with patterns, no words.
