Cynthia's Antique & Vintage Linens
This lovely antique white linen tablecloth is incredibly beautiful in person. It has everything going for it: interesting figural design, superb workmanship, exquisite fabric and superb condition. It is embroidered with punchwork mosaic roses that surround figural borders that seem to tell a harvest story. There is someone drinking, a woman cutting wheat with a scythe, a woman sowing seeds, a nude woman carrying a cloak and two women flanking a stove/brazier with fire or flames. The embroidered drawnwork technique used to create the figural panels is one I have always called Buratto. (if I am wrong, I'd love to know.) Punchwork is not "in style" at the moment and it is a difficult technique that is underrated, especially when done so masterfully. It measures 78 or 79" by 134". The condition is excellent. c.1920-40s. Stock 20619. $575. Copyright 2008 Cynthia Cooper, Main Street Antiques Contact: cynthia@antique-linens.com |
