Wonderful Antique White Cotton Lawn Layover Pillow Sham with Red Turkey Work

This pretty antique white cotton lawn layover pillow sham would have been part of a pair. It is embroidered in traditional, old red turkey redwork thread and reads "I woke and found that life was duty". This was a popular sentiment in the late 19th century because these shams were, and still are, in demand.

The now-lost companion sham would have read "I slept and drempt that life was beauty." It measures 30x28". The thread has aged to a soft red, there is some slight wear and a few scattered holes, but the sham is in basically excellent condition. c.1875-1910.

Stock 10208. $46.
