Cynthia’s Antique & Vintage Linens
This historic antique Danish linen infant's head cap was embroidered with tiny needle woven geometrics and then coated with shellac. (I would not have known this exept that it was accompanied by a note explaining the ritual.) It is a very dark and glossy blue- black and it feels almost as though it is coated with plastic. It was collected by a textile collector and shown in several textile museum exhibitions in the 1930s. The condition is excellent, but there is a little cracking at the top fold. It is offered "as discovered." I belive it to be quite old, c.18th or possibly 17th century. Tag reads: "Linen cap worn by Danish babies before baptism, therefore shellacked black because child {was} considered impure. Both bib (man's) & cap hand-woven and worked. Old Danish." Please reserve Stock 12746. $150. Sorry, this item has been sold. Copyright 2008 Cynthia Cooper, Main Street Antiques Contact: cynthia@antique-linens.com |
