Cynthia’s Antique & Vintage Linens
This antique Danish linen embroidered drawnwork panel has many wonderful sections, like a stitches sampler. It came from the collection of a woman who traveled during the early 20th century in pursuit of collectible linens, laces and stitches. She mounted exhibitions of textiles. She, herself, wove and wrote on the subject of the "Spanish Stitch." This piece was shown in several textile museum exhibitions in the 1930s. It is very long and thin, with three figural borders interspersed with plain woven fabric. It measures 14x60" including the fabulous knotted fringe at one end. From the top are bands of birds, flowers and lions. Next is a plain border with the monogram "KOD" in the center, followed by bands with flowers and animals, including peacocks and reindeer with antlers. The next band is plain; the bottom border has flowers in pots and more birds ending with the knotted lace. A paper tag from one of the museum exhibitions reads: No 9. Danish Linen and Drawnwork. The condition is excellent. From Denmark, circa 18th or 17th century. Stock 12769. $575. Copyright 2008 Cynthia Cooper, Main Street Antiques Contact: cynthia@antique-linens.com |
