Wonderful Pair of Antique Layover Pillow Shams embroidered with Turkey Red Woman Sweeping with a Broom and Children

This wonderfully unusual pair of antique embroidered white cotton layover style pillow shams are based on the 19th century concept of "Doing One's Duty." (no matter what) Each is embroidered with women sweeping with brooms and also have two children in the top corners and rosebuds in the bottom ones. The "life is duty" concept was popular during the 19th century and items feature a weary woman (never a man!) hard at work.

This pair is white cotton embroidered in Turkey red thread. They measure 28x30". Excellent condition, even with a small hole. c.1880-1900.
